                                                ICSE Language 1 strategy

The thought of preparing for the ICSE, for most  students is similar to face a wild tiger.

English paper 1 in ICSE boards is a language  proficiency evaluation paper, comprising of

 grammar and composition. Usage of good Vocabulary Plays a very important role in

scoring well .

In composition part  Students have to

Ø write good sentences and should  minimise grammatical mistakes.

Ø show their skill and hold  over English language.

They should be very alert  regarding the following

ü Format of the letter should be proper

ü They should use correct salutation and subscriptions

ü Should  avoid long writing an incorrect paragraphing

ü story should be narrated with the literary background of setting.

ü Character buildings should be proper with the proper plot.

ü Student should avoid bookish language. They should write on their own

ü The answer should match what the question is demanding

ü For reading comprehension passages reading of the passage is a must.

ü Passage should be read several times to understand the meaning properly

ü The meaning of  the words from the passage have to be constructed properly from the context of the passage.

ü Students should answer specifically the question given from the passage nearly copying the Content will not fetch good marks.

·       For summary writing appropriate title to be suggested and why the title is apt should be mentioned

·       What limit restrictions should be strictly followed

·       Spelling mistakes to be avoided

·       Handwriting should be legible

  • Clarity of grammatical rules is the other prerequisite

How cruel Shylock was to demand his pound of flesh!
(Begin: It was cruel ………………………….) (ICSE 2019)Here the correct answer will be

            It was very cruel of Shylock to demand his pound of flesh.

 

I prefer going out with friends to staying alone at home.
(Begin : I would rather ………….)(ICSE 2016)Here the correct answer will be I would rather go out with friends, than stay alone at home

 

  • In case of prepositional phrases candidate should not simply guess.

For example :

1.Sneha has applied --------------------- a scholarship (ICSE 2004) – Here the correct preposition will for .

2. Stop worrying ………….. your future (ICSE 2019) Here the correct preposition will be about.

 

·       Correct usage of gerund and infinitive should be ensured while joining sentences

*    Write accurately and concisely

*    Enhance your scoring ability in grammar

*    Improve your reading habits to comprehend the unseen passage in a better manner

*    learn to write in your own words rather than mugging from grades and prepared notes.

*    take initiatives to read newspapers regularly so as to acquire the ability to use the language efficiently

*    speak in English avoid the temptation of thinking in your mother tongue and then translate into English.

*    Read for pleasure be a part of classroom debates and discussion.

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: Theodoric had been brought up by his mother, screening him from the hard realities of life. When she died she left  Theodoric alone in a world that was as real as ever. He had been staying at a country vicarage, the inmates of which had been certainly not brutal. On a particular day he set out on a journey by train. The Lithosphere

  The outermost solid surface layer of the atmosphere is called Lithosphere. It is also called Crust. The word lithosphere is derived from Greek word "lithos" which means "stones". The surface of the earth is not flat . It is uneven, with different kind of landforms - mountains, hills, valleys and plateaus. The crust is covered by the thin layer of soil .
