Are we happier than our forefathers

If we think that happiness consists of material comfort we are happier than our forefathers! however if we consider happiness is a state of well being characterized by containment  and enjoyment - our forefathers were happier than us!!

If our forefathers woke up from their eternal sleep, they would be wonderstruck at the changes brought about by their children in this world. In their days there were no railways, telephones, motorcars and aero planes . There was no electricity and there were no Junk foods, which we enjoy now. They had to travel on foot for days together if they wanted to visit distant places- there was not much advancement in medical science and the epidemics used to take a heavy toll on human lives. They were haunted by unknown fears and strange superstitious beliefs ,they were at the mercy of forces of nature and paid tribute to every object of nature out of ignorance.

The innumerable invention of science have made our lives more comfortable but we are not happier than our forefathers our forefathers led a simple life they were strong, healthy and enjoyed simple things in life. On the other hand, at present men have become  comfort loving idle persons, they do not like to do manual work as they consider it below their dignity as such they have become slaves to machine.

Our forefathers had fever once, which is satisfied by utilizing the products of nature the present generation on the other hand has more needs than can be satisfied only with money. Our ancestors use to brush their teeth with the bark of a tree  with cold water using some herbs. They had chapati with homemade butter for breakfast. The present generation needs tooth brush, tooth paste for cleaning their teeth, soaps and shampoos for bathing, geysers to heat water and bread butter, eggs, tea, coffee for breakfast, the present generation is seen anchoring for comfort all the time they have adapted themselves to the life of luxury . They are ready to sacrifice helps in order to pursue material happiness.

Our forefathers lived in a joint family, where they were happier than we are- they cared for one another. The bond of love which they shared is non-existent in the modern families of the day the idea of material acquisition has led to conflict in society it has led to loneliness in life. Family values are doing the link and shallowness script in there were no such things. During the time of our forefathers there were practically no divorces show the boom of expectation that has come with an increased affluence has brought with each property in human love.

The secret of happiness lies in the simplification of our wants and a calm and collected attitude towards life.

It is truly said

Simplicity is the essence of happiness

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: Theodoric had been brought up by his mother, screening him from the hard realities of life. When she died she left  Theodoric alone in a world that was as real as ever. He had been staying at a country vicarage, the inmates of which had been certainly not brutal. On a particular day he set out on a journey by train. The pony carriage that was to take him to the station had never been properly ordered; and when the moment  for his departure drew near, The handy man who should have helped him was no where to be found.
